5 Reasons Why You Should Be Taking Your Kid To A Chiropractor

You’ve been going for years. You know the benefits of Chiropractic care and how much it has helped you with everything from back pain to stress. But did you know that Chiropractic isn’t just for adults? Your kids can benefit from it too!

So let’s think about this for a minute…

Let’s start from the beginning. From the moment they are born, babies are exposed to trauma. The whole birthing process, whether it is a natural process or a caesarian section, involves their little bodies being pushed, twisted and sometimes even being pulled into the world. It is very easy to understand how their tiny little vertebra (the bones that make up the spine) can slip out of alignment and cause interference with their nerves.

But the trauma to their spines does not stop with birth.

It is very important to note that trauma does not always mean some huge force to the spine. Trauma can also mean a mild force that is done repetitively to an area, and over time may cause damage.

A huge example of this is when babies learn to walk. They fall hundreds, if not thousands of time during this process. Typically, these falls do not hurt and these little ones just get up and keep going until they fall again.

Learning to walk is a natural process and their bodies are designed to do this, but repetitive falling does have an impact to their spines. Subluxations from this process are inevitable.

A subluxation is when a joint begins to dislocate and become misaligned, causing the motion of the joint to be altered and the nerves to be impinged.

Babies and kids are super resilient, but that does not mean their bodies do not have damage from the whole growing up process.

From being held, learning to sit, walking, running, playing and sports-it all impacts their bodies and spines. It’s okay. It’s part of life. But it is important to understand that as parents, that you can do something to help their little bodies grow optimally.

It’s simple. Chiropractic care!

Chiropractic care is the manipulative treatment of the joints of the body and spine to remove misalignments that cause impingements to nerves, and causes disorders to the muscles and organs.

Basically, chiropractic care aligns your spine to its proper position, removing any areas where pressure may be put on nerves that send information to your body from your brain allowing your organs and muscles to function as they should.

The following is a short list of disorders that can be caused by a subluxation in your child’s spine. These are common ailments among children that parents may not realize are impacted by mild traumas to the spine causing interference with the nerves.

1. Constipation

Constipation is a very common ailment in infants and children. It occurs when a child is not able to easily digest food and pass it through the bowels and out of the body. What most parents fail to understand is that there is a link between the gastrointestinal tract and the spine.

The spine consists of the bones that protect the spinal cord. The spinal cord has nerves that relay information to and from the brain to the organs, including the digestive organs and the bowels. These nerves run from the spinal cord through holes in the spine to the organs.

When the bones of the spine become misaligned or subluxated, the holes can become narrowed causing pressure to be out on the nerves. When the nerves experience this pressure the organs of the digestive system, such as the intestines and colon, can become affected.

Chiropractors are able to easily remove the subluxations in the spine and allow for the pressure on the nerves to be removed through gentle chiropractic adjustments. When the pressure is removed, the organs can function as they should, allowing the child’s digestive system to function properly.

2. Colic

Colic is the term used for the unexplainable, uncontrollable, comfortless crying of an otherwise healthy infant. Infants suffering from colic will not only cry loud piercing screams, but they will clench their fists and flex their legs. Their abdominal muscles will be extremely tight and tense.

The truth is no one really understands exactly what causes colic, but there is patterns in the crying that has been identified. This crying is different from ordinary crying in that it can last three or more hours a day for at least three days a week and occurs for three weeks or more in a row.

Some experts believe that colic is in response to a severe pain in the abdomen that is cause by gas in the intestines or an intestinal obstruction. Some experts feel that colic is a result from an allergy to milk proteins or specific foods that cause stomach pain in babies. Regardless, the one thing that is common amongst all theories of colic, is that it is gut and stomach related.

Chiropractic care is very effective in treating colic by removing the interferences to the nerves from the spinal column to the abdominal organs, without causing more inhibitions or stimulations to functions of the body. Gentle chiropractic adjustments can restore proper function to the abdominal organs of a baby suffering from colic, resulting in a much happier little one, and less stressed parents.

3.Ear infections

Ear infections are the worst, and if you are a parent, the chances are your child has probably had at least one. It has been reported that five out of six kids have experienced an ear infection by age 3. Not only do these little ones have severe ear pain, but they may also have headaches, fever, drainage, trouble sleeping, balance trouble and hearing loss due to these infections.

Children under the age of six are more likely to get ear infections because of their Eustachian tubes being shorter and angled, which allows for bacteria and viruses to more easily enter the middle ear, which is where most ear infections begin.

Ear infections are often associated with allergies, colds and the flu because of the congestion and swelling that occurs in the throat, nasal passages, sinus cavities and Eustachian tubes with these illnesses. The swelling and congestion in these areas can cause fluid to build up and not be able to drain properly from the ears.

There are muscles that surround the Eustachian tubes. These muscles are supplied by the nerves that run from the spinal cord through the upper cervical vertebrae of the spine. When a subluxation of the upper cervical vertebrae occur, the muscles surrounding the Eustachian tubes can become tight and even swollen, causing the size of the Eustachian tube to be affected and drainage to be diminished. Gentle chiropractic adjusting to the upper cervical spine can allow for the musculature to be more relaxed and drainage to occur.

4. Asthma

Asthma occurs when inflammation occurs in the airways that bring air to the lungs from the nose and mouth. This inflammation causes the airways to become narrowed and breathing to become difficult and labored. It also causes the chest to tighten and wheezing and coughing to occur. Asthma cases can range from mild to deadly and should be monitored extremely close.

Chiropractors have long believed that the connection between the spine and lungs has been a factor in children, as well as adults, suffering from asthma. When nerves to the lungs from the spine are compromised, the result can be asthma symptoms.

The number of asthmatic cases have been on a steady rise over the last 30 years. It seems that everyone knows someone with asthma. There are several theories as to why this increase is happening. Environmental factors, genetics and  increased obesity in children seem to play a critical role in the asthmatic rate increase.

Compromised spinal posture can also be a factor in this increase rate of asthma. Think about kids today versus kids from 30 years ago. Today, kids are more sedentary than ever, opting to spend time hunched over their smartphones rather than doing anything physical involving running and playing. This bad posture can result in subluxations. Compromised spinal posture will make the vertebral bones of the spine articulate in a manner that is not natural. This can lead to the foramen (holes in the spinal column where the nerves exit) to become narrowed. When this narrowing happens, pressure is put on the nerves.

Regardless of the actual cause of asthma, chiropractic care has been known to help decrease the symptoms and allow for children to have less asthmatic attacks over time. In some cases, chiropractic treatment has been more effective than medicinal treatment.

5. Headaches

Headaches are a typical complaint of kids. The actual cause of their headache can be one of many different things including allergy or sinus related, vision difficulty, structural alignment, or many other issues.

Headaches in children are typically not caused by serious ailments, but sometimes these headaches do need immediate medical care.

With any type of headache, it is very important to have the proper diagnosis in young patients to rule out major issues, such as tumors.

Chiropractors do comprehensive examinations to determine what type of headache your child is having and what the cause or causes could possibly be. They can help determine if a lifestyle change is needed, if a referral is necessary and if chiropractic care is an option for treatment.

Chiropractic can help an array aid headaches by removing the subluxations from the cervical spine (spine in the neck and head region) and freeing the pressure from the nerves to allow them to function properly.

Chiropractors can also do soft tissue work and therapy on the musculature of the neck and head to help alleviate tension.

Sometimes, dietary changes, postural changes and lifestyle modifications are necessary to eliminates headaches. Through the extensive history done with a chiropractic examination, these changes can be addressed.

While the above conditions are commonly treated by chiropractors, it is important to note that there are many other disorders that chiropractic care can help with in infants and children. Children with allergies and sinus issues, bedwetting, scoliosis, torticollis, sleep issues, irritable baby syndrome, immune system issues, sensory disorders, ADD and ADHD, digestive issues, and many other childhood disorders and issues can benefit from chiropractic care.

Chiropractic care may not be the first treatment that comes to mind when any of these conditions occur in your child, but how amazing would it be to help your child in a non abrasive natural way without medication after medication?

It is always a great idea to be a proactive parent. Having your child checked by a chiropractor can sometimes even help prevent the onset of these disorders, not to mention it will keep their nervous systems cleared and functioning at highest level, boost immunity and allow them to grow in a superb healthy way!
